Camp History

Here is a brief history of the Scott Segerson Soccer Camp...

Soccer Camp in 1981... Barely enough young players to make up a team, yet Scott gathered them together for a week of soccer instruction. They played near a cottonwood grove at an old cowboy ranch surrounded by horses, the high desert and rattlesnakes! Chauncy Ranch near Mayer, Arizona was a lovely location.

Each summer the interest grew and a few more kids would come to camp each year.

1984: Scott met Bo at the YMCA while they were both hosting after school programs. Later that year they teamed up to run a summer day camp. The combination of Scott’s exceptional sports knowledge and teaching skills with Bo’s creative recreation and musical ability had created an awesome team!

1985: Scott invited Bo to be a part of Soccer Camp and the two have been at camp every year since then!  Scott had the desire to combine the fun of recreation camps with sport camps, yet keep the groups small for a better coach/camper ratio. This combination proved to be very successful as evident by how fast the camp fills up each year; as well as the inevitable waiting lists. Such interest would eventually convince Scott to add another week; then another. A desire to escape the heat and have a closer proximity to medical and camp supply facilities, drew us to Northern Arizona...

Camp was relocated to the cool pines of the Mogollon Rim. Camp Grace in Pinetop Lakeside became our new facility.

2005: Scott agreed to a fourth week! (Keep in mind that the staff basically works a minimum of 16 hours a day and more, with little sleep.) Saturdays are spent with the ‘stay-over kids’ that have signed up for multiple weeks; as well as preparing for the next group - but they do love it! They’ve had requests from all over to duplicate the camp elsewhere. Their hand picked staff would be the only way to recreate the camp’s success. Most of the staff have worked their way up from campers to ‘coaches in training’ and on to coach/counselors. They are invaluable! 2005 also marked Bo’s 20^th year at camp!

2006: Scott celebrates his 25th year at camp! It's an amazing benchmark and a testament to the devotion, creativity and selflessness of this talented Camp Director. Congratulations Scott, on a continuing job well done!

2008: Scott Segerson Soccer Camp adds a 5^th week! The line on Registration day began at 4:30 am and stretched around the building! One week sold out quickly... and by the next day, 3 of the 5 weeks sold out!
